Southwick Relays (Saturday, September 8th @ Southwick H.S.)

Congrats to the Lady Gaels on a very successful and enjoyable start to the 2001 season. For the third straight year, a three person team from Holyoke Catholic captured first place among the girls' teams in the 9 mile relay. Once again, the Lady Gaels were challenged by a very talented and experienced Cathedral team, but Laura Jedrzejewski, Marissa Lapointe, and Evelyn Powell successfully kept the winning streak alive (despite the fact that none of them had ever run the mile relay before). The Lady Gaels entered two teams in the 9 mile relay, and the second team of Vickie Cavanaugh, Katie Parsons, and Laura MacDonald did a nice job as well, running solid times throughout. Freshmen Lauren Urbanski and Angela Zucco combined with parents Ed Lapointe and Kathy Lynch to run the 6 mile relay, and all four runners did very well. Special thanks to Ed and Kathy for helping out and running. Special thanks to freshman Laura MacDonald as well, who after running her 3 miles in the 9 mile relay (and doing a half-mile cool down) was still willing to jump into the 6 mile relay to run a leg for Lauren (who is still bothered by a leg injury) -- nice job Laura!

For those who are interested, here is a quick summary (splits and team times) for the relays for the past two years. Keep in mind that the 9 mile course changed considerably this year -- I'm not sure if this year's course is harder or easier (though it did seem rougher and a little hillier than last year's...).
